The Director of Communications of the United Party, Solomon Owusu, says the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) ongoing internal challenges validate the concerns former NPP flagbearer aspirant Alan Kyerematen raised ahead of the 2024 general election about the party’s leadership and direction.
Speaking on the recent controversy within the NPP, Mr. Owusu said developments at the party’s meeting at the Alisa Hotel reflect what he described as a deepening leadership crisis. According to him, Alan Kyerematen had warned before the 2024 polls that the NPP was a declining political party struggling with leadership deficiencies, and current events have confirmed those concerns.
Mr. Owusu also questioned how the party handled issues surrounding former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, saying he was surprised by the response of the party’s leadership. He argued that he had carefully listened to Kennedy Agyapong’s recent remarks several times but found nothing that, in his view, brought the NPP into disrepute or damaged the party’s image.
According to the United Party Communications Director, the NPP’s current difficulties are the result of long-standing internal problems that have remained unresolved over the years. He called on the party to reflect on its past, hold some of its former leaders accountable for decisions that contributed to the current situation, and embark on meaningful reforms.
Mr. Owusu warned that failure to address the party’s internal challenges could weaken the NPP’s political fortunes. He maintained that unless the party undertakes significant reforms, it risks losing its position in Ghana’s political landscape, while the United Party continues to position itself as the country’s second major political force.
