Medeama SC head coach Ibrahim Tanko has publicly expressed his readiness to step into the role of Black Stars head coach should the Ghana Football Association and relevant authorities decide that he is the right person for the position. In a recent interview, the experienced Ghanaian tactician stated that if the opportunity arises and the decision-makers believe he is the suitable candidate, there would be no reason for him to decline. This declaration comes at a time when the senior national team finds itself without a substantive head coach following the reported departure of Carlos Queiroz, whose tenure ended amid disagreements with the Ghana Football Association and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation over contractual demands and staffing arrangements.
Tanko, a former Black Stars international known during his playing days as “Bullet,” has built a coaching career that spans both domestic and international stages. He previously served as an assistant coach under Kwesi Appiah with the senior national team, led the Black Meteors (Ghana’s Under-23 side), and held roles with the Black Galaxies as well as Cameroon’s Indomitable Lions. His playing experience includes time at Borussia Dortmund, where he contributed to Bundesliga titles and a UEFA Champions League triumph, and his coaching path has taken him through the Bundesliga, Japan’s J-League, and various youth and senior setups.
At club level, Tanko’s current success with Medeama SC has significantly elevated his profile. Appointed in January 2025 on a two-and-a-half-year contract, he took over a side that was struggling and transformed it into Ghana Premier League champions for the 2025/26 season. The Tarkwa-based club clinched the title with a game to spare after a dominant campaign, securing qualification for the CAF Champions League. Tanko has described this league triumph as the greatest achievement of his coaching career so far, crediting the trust placed in him by club president Moses Armah and the collective efforts of players, staff, and supporters. Under his guidance, Medeama not only dominated domestically but also produced several players who have drawn national team attention, with Tanko himself advocating for greater recognition of home-based talent.
As Medeama prepares for continental competition, facing a tough preliminary-round draw against TP Mazembe of DR Congo, Tanko has set ambitious targets of progressing beyond the group stage. Yet his openness to the Black Stars job reflects a broader readiness to serve at the highest level of Ghanaian football if the call comes. At 48 years old and holding a UEFA A Licence, he brings a combination of playing pedigree, hands-on national team experience, and recent proven success in turning around a club side and delivering silverware.
Ghana’s national team is expected to reconvene in September to begin preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, a competition the Black Stars will be determined to reach after missing the 2025 edition.
