Accra Hearts of Oak, also known affectionately as the Phobians, posted an announcement on 16 August 2026 promoting the Accra City Invitational Tournament.
This newly organised pre-season event is framed as a compact football fiesta involving four teams across two days of action, specifically on 21 and 23 August 2026, at the Hearts Africa Academy Complex in Pobiman.
Entry is set at a modest GH₵10, making it accessible for supporters who wish to attend matches scheduled for 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. The accompanying promotional poster highlights the tournament’s 2026/2027 pre-season status and features the logos of the participating sides: Accra Hearts of Oak themselves, Vision Football Club, Sucredu All Blacks United FC, and Port City FC.
This local invitational arrives in the context of Hearts of Oak’s recent decision to withdraw from the more established 2026 GHALCA Top-4 Tournament.
Just days earlier, on 11 August, the club issued a formal statement explaining that the GHALCA event’s dates clashed with pre-arranged internal programmes and sat too close to the start of the new Ghana Premier League campaign, potentially disrupting their carefully planned preparations.
Although Hearts had requested a schedule adjustment from the Ghana League Clubs Association, those efforts were unsuccessful, leading management to conclude that stepping aside was the most appropriate course.
FC Samartex was subsequently named as their replacement for the GHALCA competition, which is set for 26–30 August. By creating their own Accra City Invitational, Hearts of Oak have secured competitive match practice on their preferred timeline while retaining full control over logistics and focus.
The venue itself adds further significance. The Hearts Africa Academy Complex in Pobiman represents a major long-term infrastructure investment by the club under the leadership of Executive Chairman Togbe Afede XIV.
The facility includes multiple football pitches, academy buildings, dormitories, training amenities, and ongoing development toward a mini-stadium and additional structures. Hosting matches there allows the club both to showcase these modern resources to fans and partners and to integrate the tournament into its broader development and preparation strategy for the coming season.
