Mahdi Jibril Questions NPP’s 2028 Strategy, Defends NDC’s Electoral Structures

The Director of Elections and Information Technology of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mahdi Jibril, has described the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) claim that its newly elected executives can lead the party to victory in the 2028 general elections as “laughable.”

According to him, the NPP has retained political figures who, in his view, failed to convince Ghanaians during their time in government, making it difficult for the party to present itself as a new alternative.

Mahdi Jibril questioned how the NPP intends to win the 2028 elections without introducing new ideas and a different political strategy.

He cited the Greater Accra Region, which he described as one of the NPP’s strongholds, and questioned the party’s decision to select a former CEO and Member of Parliament who lost his parliamentary seat to lead the region.

He also questioned how the NPP expects to reclaim constituencies such as Ledzokuku, where the individual had previously described himself as the best person to win the seat but subsequently lost it.

Mahdi further criticised the NPP’s decision to elect former Bono East Regional Chairman Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, arguing that some members of the party have themselves expressed concerns about his style of communication.

He said the NPP must tell Ghanaians what new policies and programmes it intends to introduce rather than relying on insults and past political achievements.

According to him, Ghanaian voters have moved beyond campaign strategies based on T-shirts and political rhetoric and are now demanding tangible development and solutions to their challenges.

Mahdi Jibril also challenged the NPP to account for the projects it undertook in areas such as Suame East and Suame West while it was in government, rather than assuming that voters will automatically return to the party.

On the NDC, he said the governing party does not depend solely on individual executives to win elections, but relies on strong structures and an organised electoral system.

He said the NDC has learnt from its previous internal elections and improved its processes to ensure that future elections are peaceful, transparent and credible.

Mahdi disclosed that the NDC is expected to open nominations for its constituency elections between September 15 and 17, with 17 positions expected to be contested.

He said the youth organiser position is among those attracting significant attention.

“We are not saying we are perfect, but with what we have done before, we know how to conduct a peaceful election,” he said.

Mahdi Jibril assured NDC members that the structures and timetable being used for the upcoming elections are intended to serve the interests of the party and not those of any individual.

He added that the NDC would not become complacent despite being in government and would continue to strengthen its structures ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Mahdi Jibril, Director of Elections and IT for the NDC, was speaking with Citizen Kofi Owusu on Ahotor FM’s Adekyee Mu Nsem in Accra on August 17, 2026.
