Hearts of Oak Held to Frustrating Goalless Draw by Berekum Chelsea in Matchday 23 Clash

Accra Hearts of Oak, riding high after their gritty 1-0 Super Clash win over bitter rivals Asante Kotoko just a week earlier at the Baba Yara Stadium, headed into their Matchday 23 Ghana Premier League encounter full of confidence but were ultimately left frustrated at home.

The match took place on Sunday, February 22, 2026, at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium in Legon, Accra, where the Phobians hosted a determined Berekum Chelsea outfit.

Despite dominating large spells of possession and creating several clear-cut chances, Hearts of Oak could not break through a stubborn and well-drilled Chelsea defense. Goalkeeper Benjamin Asare was called into action early, producing a sharp save to deny the visitors in the first half, while later in the game, Berekum Chelsea defender Mohammed Seidu made a vital goal-line clearance to preserve the deadlock after a Hearts effort looked destined for the net.

There were also penalty shouts from the home side that went unheeded, adding to the growing sense of frustration among the Phobians and their passionate supporters.

Berekum Chelsea, sitting in the lower reaches of the table and desperate for points to climb away from trouble, adopted a disciplined, compact approach throughout.

They frustrated Hearts with tactical time-wasting tactics—players repeatedly going down, which drew criticism from Hearts coach Didi Dramani post-match, who felt referee Jacob Bababu should have issued cautions—and focused on counter-attacks without ever truly threatening to steal the win. Their resilience earned them a hard-fought and valuable point, keeping them around 15th position with around 27 points.

The 0-0 stalemate represented a missed opportunity for Hearts of Oak to close the gap at the top following the weekend’s other key results. Leaders Medeama SC were held to a goalless draw away at FC Samartex 1996, while Bibiani Gold Stars secured a dramatic late comeback victory to surge closer to the summit.

As a result, Hearts remain in third place on 40 points (from 10 wins, 10 draws, and 3 losses) , still five points behind Medeama at the summit in what has become a tightly contested three-way title race involving Medeama, Bibiani Gold Stars, and the Phobians—with the gap from first to third now just six points and 11 rounds remaining.

This draw highlighted ongoing challenges for Hearts in converting territorial dominance and pressure into goals against defensively organized lower-table sides, even as their recent form—including strong defensive records and clean sheets—keeps them firmly in the title conversation heading into the business end of the 2025/26 season.
