“Government Plans Satellite Firm Licensing as Backup Amid Internet Disruptions – Ursula Owusu-Ekuful”

Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, the Minister for Communications and Digitization, has declared the government’s intention to swiftly license satellite firms to act as backup providers for mobile network operators in light of recent service disruptions.

Since Thursday, March 14, Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) have encountered disruptions, resulting in numerous Ghanaians being without internet access.

Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful revealed this strategy while addressing Parliament in Accra on Monday, providing an update on the situation.

She mentioned that Star-link is currently undergoing the licensing process, while other operators are being urged to establish operations in Ghana. Additionally, she emphasized the importance of investing in the operationalization of RASCOM, the regional African satellite company, rather than individual countries pursuing separate initiatives.

Furthermore, she emphasized that all network operators must arrange and execute alternative routes to restore full services, which they are currently undertaking. Moreover, organizations and enterprises are encouraged to host their content, databases, applications, and services in at least two tier 3 or 4 data centers located in different regions.
