The Municipal Fire Commander for Goaso, DO II Bernard Kanyi Adoagyi, has urged residents to switch off and unplug electrical appliances whenever there is a power outage to help prevent domestic fire outbreaks.
He made the call during a clean-up exercise at Dominase in the Asunafo North District of the Ahafo Region.
According to DO II Adoagyi, leaving electrical appliances connected during power outages could expose them to damage when power is restored, as sudden power surges may exceed the capacity of the appliances.
He warned that such surges could cause electrical faults, potentially resulting in fire outbreaks and significant damage to homes and property.
The Fire Commander also advised parents and guardians to keep dangerous objects, particularly machetes, out of the reach of children to prevent avoidable injuries and accidents.
He further cautioned residents against storing petrol and other highly flammable substances in their homes, particularly in bedrooms, kitchens and other enclosed spaces.
DO II Adoagyi used the opportunity to educate residents on the proper and safe handling of gas cylinders. He advised them to first open the cylinder valve before turning on the burner and then carefully light it using a match or lighter.
He also urged residents to turn off the gas cylinder valve immediately after cooking or using the appliance.
The Fire Commander stressed that anyone who returns home and detects the smell of gas should not attempt to light the burner or switch on electrical appliances, as either action could produce a spark and trigger a fire.
Instead, residents should immediately open doors and windows to allow the accumulated gas to escape and properly ventilate the room.
DO II Adoagyi urged the public to take fire safety precautions seriously and remain vigilant to help prevent domestic fires and protect lives and property.
