The Executive Council of the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA) has engaged the leadership of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) in a consultative meeting aimed at exploring practical strategies to revive interest in domestic football and attract more supporters back to match venues.
The meeting, held at the SWAG premises, brought together representatives of both organisations in a cordial and constructive atmosphere, with discussions centred on strengthening collaboration between football clubs, administrators and the sports media.
A major concern raised during the engagement was the declining attendance at Ghanaian league matches. Both sides acknowledged that reversing the trend requires more than improving the quality of football on the pitch.
Issues including match-day entertainment, stadium facilities, security, ticketing, publicity, fixture scheduling and fan engagement were identified as key areas that need greater attention to make attending league matches a more enjoyable experience for supporters.
The meeting also underscored the important role of the media in promoting and repositioning domestic football. SWAG expressed its willingness to collaborate with GHALCA and other stakeholders to highlight positive stories about the league, promote clubs and players, and generate greater excitement and public interest around matches.
GHALCA, on its part, emphasised the need to make the domestic league more attractive, competitive and commercially viable while improving the overall match-day experience for supporters.
The Association believes that creating an environment where fans feel valued, entertained and connected to their clubs will be crucial to encouraging them to return to the stadiums.
Both organisations agreed that regular consultations and stronger collaboration among key stakeholders are essential to finding sustainable solutions to the challenges confronting Ghana football.
They also recognised that restoring the passion and excitement surrounding domestic football will require a collective effort involving clubs, players, administrators, the media, sponsors, supporters and other stakeholders.
The engagement therefore represents an important step towards strengthening the relationship between GHALCA and SWAG, with both organisations committed to playing their respective roles in the growth and development of Ghana football.
The ultimate goal is to make the Ghanaian league more attractive, enhance the match-day experience and, most importantly, bring supporters back to the stadiums in greater numbers.
