GES Boss Endorses Suspension of Inter-School Games Over Rising Violence

The Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Professor Ernest Kofi Davis, has thrown his full support behind the suspension of ongoing inter-school sports competitions in parts of the Central Region following violent disturbances.

At a high-level crisis meeting held on Monday, February 23, 2026, Professor Davis and his management team met with a delegation from the Central Regional Education Directorate to review the incidents and chart a decisive path forward.

The delegation was led by the Central Regional Director of Education, Dr. Mrs. Juliette Dufie Otami, and included key municipal and district education directors. Heads of affected schools — including Aggrey Memorial SHS, Adisadel College, Swedru School of Business, Obrachire Senior High Technical School and Kwanyako Senior High Technical School — were present, alongside sports coordinators, zonal executives, public relations officers, affected students and their parents.

The Technical Advisor to the Minister for Education, Prof. George K.T. Oduro, also attended the meeting.

Providing eyewitness accounts, the Regional Director detailed the sequence of events, identified the triggers of the clashes, outlined immediate interventions taken, and proposed stricter safety measures for future competitions.

Professor Davis strongly condemned the violence, describing the conduct of some students as unacceptable and contrary to the principles of discipline, sportsmanship and mutual respect that school competitions are meant to uphold.

He stressed that inter-school games are critical platforms for nurturing sporting talent and promoting unity among institutions, especially at a time when football and traditional games offer growing professional and financial opportunities for young people.

The GES Director-General endorsed the Central Regional Directorate’s decision to suspend all sporting activities pending thorough investigations.

Management also dismissed widespread media reports claiming a fatality. According to GES, no student died during the disturbances. The student erroneously reported dead was present at the meeting, while those hospitalised have since been discharged and are receiving medical attention.

Authorities confirmed that suspected perpetrators have been arrested and are assisting police investigations.

Professor Davis concluded with a firm warning: any student found culpable of assault will face appropriate sanctions in line with Ghanaian law and GES regulations.
