Electricity blackout: Parliament is not indebted to ECG for GH¢23 million, asserts Deputy Clerk.

Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, Deputy Clerk of the Corporate and Financial Management Services Division in Parliament, has refuted claims suggesting that Parliament owes the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) an outstanding electricity bill totaling GH¢23 million.

The power outage experienced in Parliament House and Job 600, the office complex for Members of Parliament, on Thursday, February 29, 2024, was attributed to this purported debt, as part of the ECG’s “Operation Zero Balance” initiative.

However, Mr. Ahumah Djietror clarified in an interview with Ahotor News that Parliament does not owe the stated amount to the ECG. He emphasized that while the House has been diligently making payments, discrepancies in the ECG’s system sometimes fail to accurately record these transactions. He assured that their records substantiate their payment history.

Mr. Ahumah Djietror disclosed that Parliament had already settled GH¢13 million of the alleged GH¢23 million debt on Tuesday, February 27, 2024. Currently, they acknowledge an outstanding debt of approximately GH¢12 million. He stressed that despite their timely payments, some transactions have not been properly reflected in the ECG’s system.
