EC is joking, they can’t compile new register – ASEPA

The Executive Director for the Alliance For Social Equity And Public Accountability (ASEPA) Mensah Thompson, has emphatically stated on ahotor fm (92.3) breakfast program that the Electoral Commission of Ghana is joking, in the quest to compile new register for the upcoming general polls this year.

His comments comes on the wake of the EC pilot exercise which started on Tuesday 2/06/2020 across the nation to pave way for the mother exercise.

The program according to the EC is a precursor to the main registration program scheduled to come on in the last week of June ending.

According to Mensah Thompson, the exercise amid series of complaints about broken down of Biometric Verification Devices (BvDs) raising serious concerns over the robustness and agility of the equipments for the impending national program slated to take place fews weeks from now.

Meanwhile, the EC has told the media that, despite encountering some challenges regarding the performance of the BvDs, the process went on smoothly without any major hitches.

But in a response to the pronouncement by the commission, the executive director for ASEPA, said the EC is playing games with the people of Ghana, and also scheming to disenfranchise about 10 million Ghanaians if the EC is allowed to proceed to do the raging register.
Explaining that using the Ghana passport and NIA card as prove of eligibility to vote is the December elections is highly problematic.

He noted that, the NPP government led by President Akufo Addo, is behind the orchestration by the EC to disallowed many eligible Ghanaians from taken part in the impending exercise, and called on well meaning citizens to resist what he termed as semmingly oppressors rule gimmick being exhibited by President Akufo Addo.

Mr. Thompson furthered by stating that, happenings in the EC is undemocratic and is about time civil society organizations, religious and opinion leaders call the Commissioner of the EC, Madam Jean Mensah to order before she plunge the country into a political turmoil.

Mensah Thompson told host of Adekye Mu Nsem Citizen Kofi Owusu that, if President Akufo Addo do not believe in the sanctity of the existing voters register, then he humbly summit and call on President Nana Addo to vacate the Jubilee House since it is the same register which ushered him to the Presidency in January 7th, 2020.

Recently some CSOs and leaders of political parties honored an invitation by the overlord of Ashanti Region, Otumfour Osei Tutu ll, to mediate in the impasse between the EC and the feuding factions over agitations of the New Voters Register, and related matters arising.

The National House of Chiefs are amongst some eminent bodies who have called on the EC to brief them about the modalities of the New Voters Roll, amid resentment by some political parties as the stipulated schedule draws closer for the exercise.

The EC is expected to announce the official timetable for the commencement of the 2020 Biometric Voter Registration in due time.
