TEMA, Ghana, 17th August: The Secretary General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has urged the Ghana Police Service to continue arresting and prosecuting individuals whose public comments are deemed insulting to the government or public officials.
According to him, abandoning such arrests could create tension and potentially threaten the peace and stability of the country.
Speaking on Ahotor FM’s Yepe Ahunu programme on Saturday, August 15, 2026, Mr Koomson argued that failing to act against individuals who insult public officials could provoke retaliatory responses from their supporters, creating a cycle of confrontation that could escalate into chaos.
He therefore urged the Police Service to carry out arrests where they believe offences have been committed and allow the courts to determine the matter.
“Take them to court and let them defend themselves. The court should have the final say. That is better than the Police discontinuing the arrests,” he said.
‘Don’t Call Every Arrest Political’
Mr Koomson also rejected claims by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) that recent arrests over alleged offensive comments are politically motivated.
He accused the previous NPP administration of engaging in similar practices, alleging that some individuals were arrested after stories were allegedly fabricated against them.
He cited the current Finance Minister, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, Assin Central MP James Gyakye Quayson, XYZ Broadcasting’s Oheneba Boamah, and Accra FM’s Bobie Ansah as examples of individuals who, according to him, faced such treatment under the previous administration.
He therefore cautioned the NPP against describing every arrest under the current administration as a political arrest.
Abraham Koomson Warns NDC Against Complacency
Mr Koomson further urged the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) to remain focused and avoid complacency, warning that mistakes could create an opportunity for the NPP to return to power.
He described the opposition as “dangerous snakes” and urged the NDC not to give its political opponents room to regain power, arguing that such a development would be detrimental to the interests of Ghanaians.
He called on NDC supporters and government officials to remain disciplined, focused and committed to delivering on the government’s agenda.
Mr Koomson also appealed to government appointees to intensify their work and avoid internal divisions, stressing that the government should focus on addressing the concerns of Ghanaians.
Calls for Calm in TMA-TDC Dispute
The GFL Secretary General also used the opportunity to call for calm in the ongoing dispute between the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) and TDC Ghana Limited.
He appealed to both institutions to exercise restraint and work towards resolving their differences in the interest of the people of Tema.
Mr Koomson further called on President John Dramani Mahama to intervene in disputes between state institutions, stressing that the disagreement between TMA and TDC is not the only conflict requiring presidential attention.
His comments come amid renewed national debate over freedom of expression, the limits of public commentary and the use of state institutions following the opposition NPP’s “Democracy Under Attack” demonstration held on Thursday, August 6, 2026.
