TEMA, Ghana, 4 April: The Secretary-General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has stated that appointing a Defense Minister is not an immediate priority for the country, urging government instead to focus on addressing the ongoing tomato supply challenges.
According to him, while the appointment of a Defense Minister is important, it is not urgent at this time, as existing structures within the security sector are already functioning effectively.
Speaking on Ahotor FM’s Yepe Ahunu show on Saturday, April 4, Mr. Koomson argued that national attention should be directed toward stabilizing the supply of tomatoes, which has become a pressing concern for many households.
He noted that importing tomatoes from neighboring countries such as Burkina Faso is a shame describing the situation as worrying for a country with vast arable land like Ghana.
Abraham Koomson further pointed out that Ghana’s continued reliance on tomato imports reflects deeper structural challenges in the agricultural sector. He emphasized that the country has the capacity to produce enough tomatoes locally and reduce dependence on imports.
While advocating immediate intervention to address the current crisis, he also stressed the need for long-term investment in local tomato production to ensure food security and price stability.
He warned that Ghana cannot continue to rely on imports for crops that can easily be cultivated across the country, urging authorities to prioritize policies that support local farmers and boost agricultural productivity.
