Child diabetes is on a increase in Ghana

The two types of diabetes case in the country are on the increase among children, which has to do with genetics and lifestyle. The choice of balance diet is very important to help provide balance level of sugar in the body.  

According to reports; the study of 106 consecutive new diagnoses of diabetes in young people with the age of 20 years in a tertiary referral centre in Ghana, type 1 predominated (85%) with the remaining cases clinically diagnosed as type 2. Both types had a female preponderance. Type 1 peak age of onset was 12-13 years. All type 2 subjects had acanthosis nigricans.

Most presented in ketoacidosis signifying a lack of awareness of presentation features. Clinic numbers quickly rose due to availability of supplies and expertise

The worrying threats of case of childhood diabetes is very alarming and there is a need for parents and school authorities who manages these children to try and control high intake of carbonated drinks with high sugar content and colour flavor.

Millicent Mensah Torkornoo, a Certified Dietician said this on Adekyee Mu Nsem morning show on Ahotor 92.3 FM hosted by Citizen Kofi Owusu in Accra.

She said there is a need for parents and school authorities to create more physical activities for children more both at home and in schools.

The indoor games such as video games, too much of watching TV and all kinds of games on phones where parents create an environment of engaging the children in indoor activities must be discourage to help them burn sugar calories in outdoor physical activities to control the symptoms of genetics or lifestyle diabetes.

Speaking on the same platform Lion Frank Kojo Nutifafa, Past President Accra Ultimate Lions Club disclosed that, the high case of childhood diabetes is worrying and there is a need for concerted efforts to work hard to cultivate a culture of eating good healthy food.

More especially, the strong advertorial drive backing carbonated drinks and pastries with high sugar content must be discouraged in our media space.

He further call for more outdoor physical activities in schools, keep fit clubs and community groups to keep the body fit in building a strong immune system against any symptoms that may lead to diabetes.

In another development, Lion Winniefred Yemotiokor Yemofie stated that parents must instill good discipline culture of taking more fruits and diet that don’t contains high level of sugar. She opined that, parents must be firm and decisive to discouraged children from taking too much sugary drinks and food at homes and in school.

Lets teachers and the school caterers who are in charge of the children’s and pupils in schools in the country to help parents who are career workers to feed them with balance diet with less sugar content.
