TEMA, Ghana, 20th June: The Secretary-General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has predicted that Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson, Jean Mensa, could eventually resign from her position following recent developments within the Commission.
According to him, the voluntary departure of the EC’s deputy chairpersons signals that the Chairperson herself may find it difficult to continue in office, especially when new deputies are appointed to replace them.
His comments come after the government announced changes at the Electoral Commission. Deputy Chairperson in charge of Corporate Services, Dr. Bossman Asare, has submitted his resignation letter, effective July 31, 2026, while another Deputy Chairperson, Samuel Tettey, has officially retired from the Commission.
Government has indicated that steps are underway to appoint new officials to fill the vacant positions.
Speaking on Ahotor FM’s Yepe Ahunu programme on Saturday, June 20, Abraham Koomson questioned how Jean Mensa would be able to effectively work with newly appointed deputies, particularly if they are strong personalities with different approaches to the administration of the Commission.
He argued that the Electoral Commission under Jean Mensa was largely shaped and influenced by the previous Akufo-Addo administration, and therefore the recent departures could mark the beginning of a broader transition within the institution.
Mr. Koomson suggested that once the new deputy chairpersons assume office, the EC Chairperson may find it challenging to adapt to the new working environment and could ultimately choose to step down.
He also commended President John Mahama for what he described as a different approach to handling leadership changes at the Electoral Commission.
According to him, unlike former President Nana Akufo-Addo, whose administration oversaw the removal of former EC Chairperson Charlotte Osei, President Mahama has not moved to dismiss current EC officials. Instead, he noted that changes are occurring through resignations and retirements.
Abraham Koomson maintained that with new deputy chairpersons expected to be appointed, the dynamics within the Electoral Commission could significantly change, potentially leading to Jean Mensa’s resignation in the future.
