Former Black stars defender who captained the National teams at all levels, Joe Addo has advised the Ghana Football Association to choose a leader to lead a team and not just a captain.
In the interview, He distinguishes the difference between a captain and a leader.
” There are people with the armband but they are not leaders. For Ghanaians, when they see somebody with an armband they think that person is a leader, no. There are a lot of people who are captains of that band who cannot lead. You know if you go to the dressing room you can’t say anything. I remember Abedi Pele as my best example because he captained me before. This is a guy who when we are in a camp, will come to everybody’s room to see if everyone is sleeping because he knows the task ahead. He said,” some of the players are undisciplined.
”We don’t sleep, we play cards ahh, or talk or be on phone, we don’t sleep. But he will go round. He is not going to mandate you to sleep but will talk to you about the game tomorrow, he will discuss the game plan. He will tell this guy he is dangerous, I have played with him before in France and then will show you the trick. This is what we call a leader, that is what I’m saying, not someone who is a coil, shy. That is not a leader.”
He further said that
“There are some people who are not supposed to be chosen as captains, but they are chosen because of how long they have stayed in the team. It is wrong. You have to look for someone who can lead, look at the person’s attitude. It does not have to be the band that they wear on the field, it has to be how they galvanized their troop.” – he said
He concluded that how the black stars choose captains is very important and must ensure we choose the right people for the role.
