Akufo-Addo Urged: Sign Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill for Positive Legacy, Says Former Sege MP

Akufo-Addo sign the anti-LGBTQ+ bill to remember it as the only good thing you did in office – Former Sege MP

Alfred Abayateye, a former Member of Parliament for the Sege Constituency in the Greater Accra Region, urged President Akufo-Addo to approve the Human Rights and Family Values Bill recently passed by Ghana’s Parliament.

The Bill passed on February 28, 2024, bans LGBTQ activities and makes promoting, advocating, and funding them illegal. Offenders could face imprisonment ranging from 6 months to 3 years, while promoters and sponsors may be sentenced to 3 to 5 years.

However, the Bill’s approval has faced criticism, including from the US Ambassador to Ghana, Virginia Evelyn Palmer, who threatened to halt business with Ghana if the law passes.

Abayateye, speaking on Ahotor 92.3 FM‘s Yepe Ahunu show, criticized the government’s financial management, suggesting that concerns about potential aid loss due to the Bill raise questions about revenue and loan management.

He stated that if President Akufo-Addo declines to sign the bill, the next President will. “President Akufo-Addo, if you have anything for Ghanaians before leaving office, then sign the anti-LGBTQ+ bill so that we will remember you positively as the President of the land,” he remarked.
