The Traders Advocacy Group Ghana (TAGG) has commended President John Dramani Mahama for assenting to the removal of the COVID-19 levy, scheduled to take effect in January 2026.
In a statement issued on December 15, 2025, TAGG described the move as the fulfilment of a key campaign promise and a decisive step toward easing the financial pressure on traders, businesses, and importers across the country.
According to the group, the abolition of the levy signals the government’s commitment to economic stabilisation and trade facilitation at a time when many businesses are still recovering from the impact of multiple taxes and high operational costs.
TAGG further called on the government to consolidate the gains by rolling out additional reforms, particularly the harmonisation of benchmark values at the ports. Such measures, the group noted, would help reduce import costs, curb corruption, and improve transparency within the customs system.
The advocacy group expressed confidence that sustained pro-business policies will strengthen Ghana’s trade environment, position the country as a regional hub for trade facilitation, and promote long-term, sustainable economic growth.
