The Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Deputy Director of Operations at the Presidency, Mustapha Gbande, has accused the Member of Parliament for the Kpandai Constituency, Matthew Nyindam, of orchestrating a deadly bee attack on NDC supporters that left one person dead and several others critically injured.
The incident occurred in the Kpandai Constituency on December 14, 2025, amid heightened political activity ahead of the parliamentary election rerun scheduled for December 30.
According to Mr. Gbande, he and other NDC officials were in the constituency to engage party supporters when they received intelligence alleging that members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), purportedly led by their parliamentary candidate, Matthew Nyindam, had brought three so-called “juju men” from Niger and lodged them at a local hotel. He claimed some NDC supporters, angered by the information, threatened to retaliate, but he personally intervened to prevent any confrontation.
Mr. Gbande further alleged that after the engagement ended and party officials had left the area, some NDC supporters who remained behind were later attacked by a swarm of bees. He said the attack resulted in one death, with several others sustaining serious injuries.
He maintained that the use of bees as a weapon is not unprecedented in the Kpandai area, describing it as a known local phenomenon. Questioning the motives behind the alleged act, Mr. Gbande accused the NPP and Mr. Nyindam of resorting to dangerous tactics in the run-up to the election rerun.
Meanwhile, one person has been confirmed dead following the bee attack on NDC supporters after the campaign programme. The deceased, identified as a chief from one of the communities in the district, was reportedly riding a motorbike when he was attacked by a swarm of bees. In the ensuing panic, he dismounted and attempted to flee but was beaten to death amid the confusion, according to eyewitness accounts.
Some residents have attributed the incident to spiritual causes, describing it as a curse, while others have called for calm and a thorough investigation.
Security agencies have launched investigations to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident and to determine whether any criminal liability arises.
The incident comes at a tense moment in Kpandai, where the Electoral Commission is preparing for a parliamentary election rerun on December 30, 2025. The rerun follows a High Court ruling that annulled the 2024 parliamentary election results due to irregularities in the collation process.
The contest is expected to feature the same candidates who contested the 2024 polls, with both the NDC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) intensifying their campaigns as the rerun date approaches.
