The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, who also serves as Member of Parliament for the Banda Constituency, Ahmed Ibrahim, has announced a nationwide sanitation exercise scheduled from December 13 to December 20, 2025.
According to the Minister, the initiative is necessitated by the significant influx of visitors into Ghana during the Christmas period. He noted that December has become a major festive month, marked not only by Christmas celebrations and church conventions across the country, but also by the “December in Ghana” activities, which peak toward the end of the month.
Mr. Ibrahim stressed that the cleanliness of communities plays a critical role in shaping visitors’ perceptions. He explained that the first impression people form upon entering a community is largely influenced by the state of the environment. A clean and orderly surroundings, he said, leaves a positive and lasting impression, while poor sanitation creates a negative perception that is difficult to change, even if improvements are later made.
The Minister further disclosed that some sanitation-related activities were delayed due to ongoing reviews of contracts under the Youth Employment Agency (YEA). However, he assured that the process is nearing completion and that funds have already been released to the various Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to support the exercise.
He emphasized that the success of the nationwide sanitation campaign will depend on the active participation of all stakeholders, including local authorities, community leaders, and residents, adding that maintaining a clean environment is a shared responsibility and not solely the duty of government.
