Cristiano Ronaldo will be available for Portugal’s opening match at the 2026 World Cup after serving a one-game suspension against Armenia on November 16, 2025.
The suspension stemmed from the first red card of his 226-cap international career, received during Portugal’s shock 2-0 defeat to the Republic of Ireland in Dublin on November 13.
In the 59th minute, while challenging Dara O’Shea for a loose ball in the box, Ronaldo swung an elbow into the defender’s back. Referee Glenn Nyberg initially showed a yellow card, but after a VAR review the decision was upgraded to a straight red for violent conduct.
FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee later imposed a three-match ban, but suspended two of those games for a one-year probationary period, citing Ronaldo’s previously impeccable disciplinary record with the national team. He therefore sat out only the final qualifier against Armenia and will carry no further suspension into the World Cup.
Portugal sealed direct qualification anyway, thrashing Armenia 9-1 without their captain. Bruno Fernandes and João Neves both scored hat-tricks in a statement performance that underlined the squad’s depth.
At 41 by the time the tournament begins in June 2026, Ronaldo will make his sixth World Cup appearance, matching the record he shares with Lionel Messi. With the disciplinary cloud lifted, he is now free to lead Portugal from the first whistle when the group stage kicks off next summer in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
The red card episode becomes just a footnote: Ronaldo has served his punishment, the slate is clean, and he will be on the pitch for Portugal’s opener.
Portugal will know their group opponents on December 5, when the draw is officially conducted.
