TEMA, Ghana, 15th November,2025: Secretary General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has called for immediate sanctions against the military officers who supervised the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recruitment exercise at the El-Wak Sports Stadium, where a tragic stampede claimed six lives and left several others injured.
The GFL Boss strongly condemned the incident, describing it as an avoidable tragedy that exposed lapses in planning, supervision, and crowd management.
Speaking on Ahotor FM’s Yepe Ahunu show on Saturday, 15th November 2025, Mr. Koomson expressed deep concern over the handling of the exercise by the military.
“I have serious issue with the military. They didn’t handle the issue well,” he said.
He further emphasized the need for regular psychological and medical evaluations for security personnel, suggesting that some officers exhibit questionable behaviour on duty.
“There should be psychological evaluation on security personnel to periodically examine them. The officers who supervised must be identified and dealt with,” he said.
The deadly incident occurred on Wednesday, November 12, during a GAF recruitment screening at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra. Thousands of eager applicants many of whom had travelled from various regions arrived as early as dawn, long before the scheduled start of the screening.
A sudden, uncontrolled rush at one of the entry points triggered the stampede, resulting in the deaths of six young women and leaving numerous others injured. Emergency teams transported the wounded to the 37 Military Hospital and other nearby medical facilities for urgent treatment.
In the wake of the tragedy, Abraham Koomson urged the Ghana Armed Forces and other security agencies to decentralise their recruitment processes, implement strict batch scheduling, and strengthen crowd-control measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
