There is a wider effort by the government to restore lost forest cover and to contribute to the global climate change fight.
As a result, the president, Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo-Addo has announced that, Ghana is embarking on an afforestation drive to plant 20 million trees this year.
This was announced on Tuesday in Accra when he launched this year’s Green Ghana Project.
He said, “we must make concerted efforts to protect our forest for the benefit of current and future generations”.
The president explained that, our forest is a major resource for the socio-economic development of the country and must be protected.
Last year, the president launched the Green Ghana Project as a response to climate change and to restore our degraded landscape by illegal mining.
About seven million trees were planted nationwide during the exercise which was commemorated on June 11.
This year, the day will be observed on Friday, June 10.
Half of this year’s targeted 20 million seedlings will be planted within degraded forest reserves across the country.
