Karikari’s Late Strike Fires Hearts of Oak to Victory Over Holy Stars

Martin Karikari’s 82nd-minute strike gave Hearts of Oak a 1-0 victory over Basake Holy Stars in a Matchweek 8 Ghana Premier League fixture on Friday, 23 October 2026, at the University of Ghana Stadium in Accra.

The result marked Hearts’ third consecutive league win and lifted the Phobians to the top of the 2026/27 table with 17 points from eight matches up from second place on 14 points after seven games,  three points clear ahead of the remaining Matchday 8 fixtures scheduled for Sunday.

Match Context
This was an early kick-off in Matchweek 8. Hearts of Oak, nicknamed the Phobians, had yet to beat Holy Stars at home in the top flight and were seeking to break that pattern while building on recent form under head coach Nebojša Kapor.

They entered the game after consecutive victories over FC Port City and Vision FC. Holy Stars arrived organised and compact, aiming to frustrate the hosts and snatch a point on the counter, as they had managed against Hearts previously.

Hearts dominated large spells, registering 17 shots —10 more than their opponents. Holy Stars defended resolutely in a disciplined shape, absorbing pressure and looking for transitions. The first half ended goalless. Ransford Mensah came closest for the hosts with a powerful free-kick that struck the post. A vital goal-line clearance also helped keep the visitors level.

The Decisive Goal
The breakthrough arrived in the 82nd minute. Substitute Martin Karikari—an attacking midfielder who had entered around the 57th minute produced a moment of individual quality.

He used clever footwork and a couple of neat shimmies to create space inside the penalty area, then unleashed a superb volley that beat goalkeeper Baffoe Rooney Razak.

The goal was widely praised as high-quality and worthy of deciding a tight contest.
Hearts protected the lead to secure the three points. Defender Kelvin Osei Asibey was named
Man of the Match.

Reactions
Coach Nebojsa Kapor expressed satisfaction with the result and especially the quality of the winning goal. He noted that every point is difficult to obtain in the league and highlighted the good action and finishing, while also acknowledging that his side created several chances but struggled to convert them earlier, making the late finish more tense than necessary. He also recognised the contribution of the supporters.

The win extended Hearts’ winning streak to three matches and strengthened their early-season title credentials. For Holy Stars it was a fourth defeat of the season despite a spirited, organised display. The visitors will look to bounce back at home against Dreams FC, while Hearts prepare for an away trip to Debibi United.
