Ghana’s Black Maidens have advanced to the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco for the first time since 2018, securing qualification with a decisive 2-0 victory over Canada in their final Group C match on Saturday, 24 October 2026.

Black Maidens beat Canada to make Round of 16 berth at the FIFA World Cup

The goals came from substitutes Linda Achiaa in the 64th minute and Christiana Ashiaku (90+6 minutes. Achiaa scored with her first touch just 35 seconds after entering the pitch, while Ashiaku added a long-range strike in stoppage time to seal the result and spark celebrations.

Match Details

Head coach Joe Nana Adarkwa’s side needed a win to progress and delivered a disciplined performance. The first half was goalless, though Ghana created the better chances. Jessica Appiah produced a standout moment, driving through the Canadian half only for her powerful shot to be tipped onto the post by goalkeeper Megan Lemieux.

A double substitution shifted the momentum. A looping pass from Hajara Adam rebounded off the post; Priscilla Mensah collected the loose ball and set up Achiaa for the opener. Ghana then held firm defensively. Goalkeeper Belinda Maku Aklie recorded her first clean sheet of the tournament. Midfielder Seidatu Wahab was named Player of the Match.

Canada finished third in the group with three points and must wait to see if they advance among the four best third-placed teams. Norway were eliminated.

Group C Campaign

Ghana finished second with four points from three matches, behind Brazil (seven points):

•  Norway 3–0 Ghana (opening match) — a difficult start.

•  Ghana 3–3 Brazil — a thrilling comeback. Brazil led early (Nicolly Manuel), but Rafia Osman equalised, Gloria Ameaa/Adomako put Ghana ahead, and Brazil levelled before half-time and again later (Indy). Priscilla Mensah’s 85th-minute equaliser secured a vital point.

•  Ghana 2–0 Canada — the decisive win.

The top two teams in each of the six groups, plus the four best third-placed sides, advanced to the knockout stage in the expanded 24-team tournament (17 October–7 November 2026).

Historical Context

This marks Ghana’s return to the Round of 16 since the 2018 tournament in Uruguay, where the Black Maidens reached the quarter-finals. In 2018 they started strongly (including a 5–0 win over hosts Uruguay, with Mukarama Abdulai scoring a hat-trick) and advanced from the group stage.

Ghana’s best-ever performance remains the bronze medal at the 2012 edition in Azerbaijan. They have reached the last eight on multiple occasions and are among Africa’s stronger sides at this level. The team missed the previous two editions due to a CAF ban and returned after qualifying by edging Senegal on penalties following a 2–2 aggregate.

Next Match and Outlook

The Black Maidens will face Argentina debutants who topped their group in the Round of 16 on Wednesday, 28 October 2026.

Coach Adarkwa expressed pride in his players: “They made us extremely proud… We came here purposely for a win and lo and behold, it happened.” He noted the substitutions worked well and acknowledged tougher tests ahead while aiming to make Africa proud.
