The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has confirmed that the third generating unit at the Akosombo Dam has been successfully restored to operation, marking a significant step toward stabilising Ghana’s power supply.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Monday, April 27, the Minister disclosed that two generation units had already been brought back online, contributing approximately 280 megawatts (MW) to the national grid, with the third unit then pending.
In a subsequent update shared on his Facebook page, Mr. Jinapor confirmed the successful restoration of the third unit, describing it as a major milestone in efforts to improve electricity generation and enhance supply reliability.
“I confirm that earlier today, the third unit at Akosombo was successfully put into operation. This milestone will improve power generation and enhance supply reliability. It also reflects our continued commitment to maintaining a resilient power system,” he stated.
He further revealed that engineers are currently working to bring a fourth unit into operation in the coming days.
The progress follows disruptions caused by a devastating fire at a substation operated by the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) in Akosombo, which led to power outages in parts of the country.
Despite the setback, the Minister expressed confidence that ongoing restoration efforts demonstrate government’s determination to emerge stronger from the incident, with a renewed focus on ensuring stability and reliability in electricity supply.
“The technical team is currently working diligently to bring on the fourth unit. This progress underscores our resolve to come out of this unfortunate fire incident stronger, with a renewed focus on stability and reliability in power supply,” he added.
