TEMA, Ghana, 11 April: Abraham Koomson, Secretary-General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), has backed President John Dramani Mahama, stating that legislation on LGBTQ issues should not be treated as a national priority at this time.
According to him, Ghana faces more urgent economic and social challenges that require immediate government attention. He argued that while discussions around LGBTQ matters continue, they should not overshadow critical issues such as taxation, job creation, and economic transformation.
Speaking on Ahotor FM’s Yepe Ahunu show on Saturday, April 11, Mr. Koomson noted that the country can address LGBTQ matters through appropriate legal frameworks when necessary, but emphasized that such legislation should not take precedence over pressing national concerns.
“Our focus should be on fixing the economy and improving livelihoods,” he said, adding that government attention must remain on policies that directly impact citizens’ well-being.
Abraham Koomson further urged the President to consider any proposed legislation on its merits when it is formally presented, rather than responding to political pressure.
He accused the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) of attempting to use the issue to divert attention from more critical governance matters.
He maintained that the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) should remain focused on delivering economic results, arguing that this will ultimately determine public confidence and electoral success.
Abraham Koomson concluded that prioritizing economic stability and development is key to addressing the broader needs of the country.
