Labour Unions to Engage Government on Base Pay and Minimum Wage – GFL

TEMA, Ghana, 11 April: The Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL) has indicated that labour unions will soon formally write to government to commence negotiations on base pay and the national minimum wage.

According to the Secretary-General of the GFL, Abraham Koomson, the move is aimed at securing salary adjustments that will help workers cope with the rising cost of living.

He emphasized that current economic conditions demand urgent action to protect the welfare of Ghanaian workers.

Speaking on Ahotor FM’s Yepe Ahunu show on Saturday, April 11, Abraham Koomson said the time is ripe for organized labour to engage government in meaningful discussions. He expressed concern about what he described as government’s responsiveness to political pressure, insisting that decisions affecting workers must be carefully considered.

Commenting on government’s recent decision to suspend selected taxes and margins on fuel for four weeks to ease rising fuel prices, Mr. Koomson disagreed with the timing of the intervention, describing it as premature.

He warned that removing such revenue streams could lead to financial shortfalls, potentially affecting the government’s ability to meet key obligations.

“We do not want a situation where government will later claim there is no money when it is time to negotiate base pay and the national minimum wage,” he cautioned.

The GFL leader concluded by stressing the need for prudent fiscal management to ensure that upcoming negotiations yield meaningful outcomes for workers across the country.
