Nico O’Reilly’s quick-fire brace proved decisive as Manchester City claimed their fifth Carabao Cup triumph under Pep Guardiola’s management, securing a commanding 2-0 victory over Arsenal at Wembley Stadium.
The result dashed the Gunners’ ambitions of achieving an unprecedented quadruple this season, handing them a painful setback despite entering the match as strong favorites given their commanding position at the top of the Premier League table.
Arsenal looked sharp from the outset and very nearly took the lead within the opening ten minutes when Kai Havertz found himself in a promising position, only for Manchester City’s goalkeeper James Trafford to produce a crucial save with his legs, keeping the scores level at a vital early stage.
For much of the first half, City struggled to make any real impact in attack, failing to register a single shot on target and not managing any kind of meaningful effort until the 44th minute as Arsenal controlled proceedings and looked comfortable.
The complexion of the match shifted dramatically after the interval, however, as Manchester City emerged with renewed energy and purpose. They began pressing Arsenal much higher up the pitch, regaining control of possession and forcing the Gunners onto the back foot.
It was during this dominant spell that Arsenal’s goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, already on a yellow card after misjudging a long ball and hauling back Jérémy Doku, became the unwitting architect of his side’s downfall.
A floated cross from Rayan Cherki drifted toward the Arsenal penalty area, where Kepa inexplicably flapped at the ball, flicking it over his own shoulder and into the danger zone inside his six-yard box.
Nico O’Reilly reacted with excellent instincts, stooping low to direct a header past the stranded keeper and beyond the reach of Martín Zubimendi, who could not quite get there in time to intervene. The goal gave City the lead and injected fresh momentum into their performance.
Mikel Arteta immediately looked to turn the tide by introducing substitutes, but Manchester City responded in ruthless fashion, exactly as Pep Guardiola would have demanded. They pressed home their advantage with a second goal almost instantly, effectively knocking the stuffing out of Arsenal’s challenge.
Rodri and Matheus Nunes combined intelligently down the right flank, with Nunes delivering a precise cross that found the onrushing O’Reilly once more. The young midfielder powered forward and met the ball with a firm header that sailed past a motionless Kepa, leaving Bukayo Saka standing statuesque in disbelief as the net rippled for a second time.
Despite making further changes in a bid to spark a comeback, Arsenal never truly looked like getting back into the contest. Their attacks lacked conviction, and City comfortably saw out the remainder of the match to seal the victory.
The defeat marked a fourth successive Carabao Cup final loss for the Gunners, compounding the frustration for a squad that now carries enormous pressure as they chase a first Premier League title in 22 years while still harboring hopes of lifting their first-ever Champions League trophy.
For Manchester City, O’Reilly’s heroics delivered a timely boost in confidence and silverware, underlining their resilience even against formidable opponents.
