2024 Elections: Cletus Avoka expresses concern about how insecurity is affecting campaign activities in Bawku.

Zebilla’s Member of Parliament, Cletus Avoka, has expressed grave concerns about the security situation in the Kusaug traditional area, particularly in Bawku, ahead of the December elections.

Avoka has lamented the challenging conditions and raised doubts about the possibility of conducting a transparent electoral process in the Kusaug region. He pointed out the harsh realities faced by locals, highlighting the difficult choice posed by the area’s violence. He questioned the feasibility of fair elections when there is a looming threat of armed conflicts.

Expressing his worries, Avoka noted, “At this point, I cannot assure our security for 2024. I hail from the Bawku area, and I am unsure how some candidates will campaign there. There are daily casualties among young men, even those in the military. How can we claim the election will be fair in such circumstances?”

He asked, if on election day in Bawku or elsewhere, gunfire erupts in the morning, would you still go out to vote? Can we consider that a free and fair election? The purpose of such gunfire is to intimidate people. So, if gunfire starts at 4 am, how can anyone safely go out to vote or determine who wins when lives are at risk?”Top of Form
