“Restore basic humanity” in Aleppo- OCHA

The warring parties in Syria have been urged by the UN humanitarian chief to “restore basic humanity” in the besieged city of Aleppo.

The advance by Syrian government forces into the east of the city is continuing with reports suggesting that a third of the rebel-held territory has been retaken.

Some 16,000 people have been displaced by the ongoing fighting in the eastern part of the city according to Stephen O’Brien, the head of the UN humanitarian affairs office or OCHA.

The agency said that intensified ground fighting and indiscriminate aerial bombardment over the past few days has reportedly killed and injured scores of others.

“We ask all parties to the conflict to restore basic humanity in Syria. We call on them to lift sieges, ensure that they do not target civilians and civilian infrastructure, and that they allow humanitarian organizations safe and unimpeded access to bring life-saving help to those displaced or under siege.” OCHA Spokesperson Jens Laerke.

Meanwhile in the western part of Aleppo city indiscriminate shelling has continued on civilian-populated areas and infrastructure.

More than 20,000 people there have been displaced in recent weeks.
