Zakiya Yandor Writes: Will you allow your child to marry a Fetish Priest?

In Ghana, Togo, Benin, and other countries of West Africa, a fetish priest is a person who serves as a mediator between the spirits and the living

Fetish priests usually live and worship their gods in enclosed places, called fetish shrines.

The question at hand now is, would you allow your child to marry a Fetish Priest?… Ahotor 92.3 Fm‘s Zakiya Yandor Uthman stepped out to ask Ghanaians.

Speaking to some people they shared their views on the topic:

Miss Aisha says “Marriage is not a joke. It’s a lifetime thing and doing it with the wrong person will cause your life. You want your home to be a pinnacle of peace and love not war. Religion is a factor to look out for when choosing a spousal. You want both parties to have a firm ground of understanding when it comes to believing in our religion. If am married to a Christian my child will have to go to church and the mosque until they decide which is good for them. This can cause conflict to the child. So I won’t allow my children to go in that direction which is the beginning of confusion”.

Another person Ms Anna also shared her views saying “Will I marry the son of a Fetish priest? A tough question there! But I might and might not marry depending on the factors. I will marry due to love and how modern religion has become these days. And I might not marry because of my African beliefs and Christian beliefs. We know what’s going on in the traditional settings and I will not want a situation where my husband will be asked to be a fetish priest just to succeed his father. It will be a conflict for me to choose and I will not want to be part of it. My family will not even accept it” she told Ms Anna.
