World Cup 2026: Black Stars Target Knockout Stage Qualification – Frederick Acheampong

Executive Council member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Frederick Acheampong, has reaffirmed that the Black Stars’ primary objective at the 2026 FIFA World Cup is to secure qualification to the knockout stage.

Ghana, making their fifth appearance at the global showpiece, have been drawn in a challenging Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama. The four-time African champions are seeking to progress beyond the group stage for the first time since their historic quarterfinal run at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Speaking to Citi Sports, Acheampong stated that advancing to the Round of 32 remains the minimum expectation for the national team and expressed confidence in head coach Carlos Queiroz’s ability to deliver on that target.

“Our target is to reach the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. We believe Carlos Queiroz understands that objective,” Acheampong said.

The experienced Portuguese tactician, who was appointed in April following Otto Addo’s departure in March, has also made Ghana’s ambitions clear, insisting that qualification from the group is a non-negotiable goal for the technical team.

“At the end of 270 minutes, we have to qualify for the second round,” Queiroz declared after Ghana’s 1-1 draw with Wales in a recent international friendly.

The Black Stars will begin their World Cup campaign against Panama on June 17 at BMO Field before taking on England on June 23 at Gillette Stadium. Ghana will then conclude their Group L fixtures with a crucial encounter against Croatia on June 27 as they bid to secure a place in the knockout rounds.

With renewed optimism under Queiroz and a squad packed with talent and experience, expectations are high that the Black Stars can make a significant impact on football’s biggest stage.
