Unplanned Outages Hit Parts of Ghana as ECG Launches System Upgrade

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has acknowledged that some parts of the country are currently experiencing pockets of unplanned power outages.

According to the company, these disruptions are largely due to ongoing distribution challenges within its network, including ageing and obsolete infrastructure, weakened cables, and overloaded transformers.

To address these challenges, the Government, in collaboration with ECG, has initiated the Transformer Upgrade and Replacement Programme (TURP).

The programme, which is being implemented in phases nationwide, aims to strengthen the power distribution network and improve overall reliability.

As part of the initiative, more than 2,500 transformers are being installed across ECG’s operational areas to increase capacity and ensure a more stable power supply.

However, ECG noted that the ongoing upgrade works will require scheduled (planned) outages in some areas, and the public will be duly informed ahead of time.

The company assured customers that efforts are underway to resolve the current challenges as quickly as possible.

ECG also apologized for the inconvenience caused and appealed to affected customers for patience and understanding as work continues to improve service delivery.

Customers experiencing unplanned outages are encouraged to report them via ECG’s hotline on 0302 611 611, where response teams are on standby to assist.

The company reaffirmed its commitment to delivering reliable and consistent electricity supply to all Ghanaians.
