Transport Unions Express Mixed Feelings About Government’s Performance Ahead of 2024 Elections

The political debate surrounding the support given by the Concern Drivers Association and the Commercial National Motor Riders Union to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2024 elections has sparked diverse opinions. Leaders of these two groups have voiced their frustrations, claiming that the government has not been responsive to their concerns or followed through on its promises during its ten months in office.

During a studio discussion on Adekyee Mu Nsem, a morning show on Ahotor 92.3 FM hosted by Citizen Kofi Owusu in Accra, the National Chairman of the Concern Drivers Association, Paa Willie, shared his perspective on the government’s stewardship and accountability. He commended the government’s efforts, particularly in improving major road networks that had long been in deplorable condition.

As the festive season approaches, Paa Willie appealed to contractors and the government to expedite work on major road projects, especially in accident-prone areas, to help save lives and protect property. He also urged the government to give a listening ear to the concerns of transport operators, particularly regarding road infrastructure and other issues affecting the transport industry.

In the same discussion, Akpanda Solomon, the National Spokesperson for the Commercial National Motor Riders Union, expressed disappointment in the government’s failure to address their concerns since coming into office. He mentioned that issues such as data collection, registration of all commercial motor riders, and the provision of uniforms and helmets remain unresolved.

According to Solomon, the union is frustrated by the government’s reluctance to establish an information desk where their issues can be addressed. He noted that access to the then-presidential candidate was easy and straightforward before the elections, but since assuming office, communication has become difficult. Solomon emphasized the need for the government to create an information platform to engage with transport unions, recognizing them as key stakeholders in both the transport sector and the broader economy.
