Chairman of the Concerned Drivers, Paa Willie, says transport operators have given the authorities one week to engage relevant stakeholders and reach an agreement on their demand for a 30% increase in transport fares.
According to him, the concerns raised by the drivers during a meeting held yesterday were acknowledged by the authorities as legitimate, although they initially requested two weeks to consult and respond to the demands.
Paa Willie said the drivers, however, decided to give the authorities one week to work towards addressing their concerns and determine whether the proposed 30% fare adjustment could be accepted.
He explained that the meeting also focused on the need for drivers to stop charging passengers unapproved fares, stressing that the practice was creating difficulties for both passengers and the transport sector.
“We went to the meeting and agreed that we should calm down some of the drivers who are taking unapproved fares,” he said.
He added that members of the group would work with relevant transport organisations to monitor the situation and discourage drivers from charging fares that have not been officially approved.
Paa Willie further disclosed that the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) and the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) are expected to issue a formal communication to drivers directing them to stop charging unapproved fares.
He was speaking on Ahotor FM’s Morning Show in Accra on August 9, 2026, where he discussed the concerns of commercial transport operators and ongoing engagements with the authorities over transport fares.
