The unfulfilled promise by the government to provide laptops to teachers caused the strike, not the NDC – Akatsi North MP

The three prominent teacher unions in Ghana have collectively requested the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations to reschedule their meeting with the National Labour Commission. Originally set for today, March 22, the unions seek to postpone it to Monday, March 25. These unions, namely the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers, have been engaged in a nationwide strike since Wednesday, March 20.

Their decision to strike stems from what they perceive as the government’s reluctance to address their pressing conditions of service. Despite the National Labour Commission’s directive for the unions to cease their strike action, it persists without cessation.

In response to the ongoing strike, Member of Parliament for the Akatsi North Constituency, Peter Nortsu Kotoe, aired his thoughts on Accra-based Ahotor 92.3 FM. Mr. Kotoe vehemently denied allegations suggesting the involvement of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in orchestrating the strike of the three teacher unions in Ghana.

According to Honorable Kotoe, teachers across Ghana are grappling with a myriad of challenges. One such issue highlighted by Kotoe is the unfulfilled promise by the government to provide laptops to teachers. These unmet promises and the broader challenges facing teachers, as outlined by Kotoe, are cited as key reasons for the ongoing strike.
