Tema West Municipal Assembly Responds To Flooding, Assures Residents of Coordinated Emergency Response

The Tema West Municipal Assembly (TWMA) extends its heartfelt sympathies to all residents, businesses, and institutions affected by the recent heavy rainfall and flooding in parts of the municipality.

The Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Ludwig Teye Totimeh, has activated a coordinated emergency response in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the 48 Engineers Regiment, the Ghana National Fire Service, the Ghana Police Service, and other relevant stakeholders to safeguard lives and property, assess the extent of the damage, and provide immediate assistance to affected communities.

While the exceptional intensity of the rainfall contributed significantly to the flooding, persistent environmental challenges—including choked drains, indiscriminate disposal of refuse, and encroachment on waterways—continue to aggravate the situation. In response, the Assembly is intensifying the desilting of drains, the construction and rehabilitation of stormwater drainage systems, environmental sanitation activities, and the enforcement of planning and sanitation regulations as part of a comprehensive strategy to reduce future flood risks.

To support ongoing damage assessment and emergency operations, the Assembly is appealing to residents to submit clear photographs and videos of flood-affected areas, together with their exact locations. This information will enable the Assembly and its emergency response partners—including NADMO, the 48 Engineers Regiment, the Ghana National Fire Service, and the Ghana Police Service—to identify priority areas and coordinate timely and effective interventions.

Residents are also advised to remain vigilant, avoid walking or driving through floodwaters, comply with all safety directives issued by the emergency services, and continue to support environmental sanitation efforts by refraining from practices that obstruct drains and waterways.

The Tema West Municipal Assembly remains committed to working closely with community leaders, residents, and relevant stakeholders to implement sustainable flood mitigation measures that will protect lives and property while building a safer and more resilient municipality.

Signed
