The Ghana Police Service has arrested six suspects and recovered GH¢300,000 following a robbery attack along the Portor–Gurumpe Highway in the Bono East Region.
In a statement, the Bono East Regional Police Command said officers stationed at the Portor Police Barrier received intelligence on the night of July 19, 2026, about an ongoing robbery a short distance from the checkpoint. A police team was immediately dispatched to the scene, forcing some of the suspects to flee into a nearby bush. One of the suspects, Abdul Sadat Ali, 24, who was driving a Toyota Voxy, was arrested at the scene. During preliminary interrogation, he allegedly implicated Samad Issahaka, 24, the driver of a Kia Rhino truck, leading to his subsequent arrest.
Police investigations revealed that the owner of the Kia Rhino truck, Yahaya Seidu, 35, had directed his driver to transport him to Buipe to purchase cattle. Investigators believe the driver, knowing his employer was carrying a substantial amount of cash, allegedly collaborated with five other suspects to orchestrate the robbery. According to police, the group, armed with what has been described as a toy pistol, allegedly tailed the vehicle from Offinso in the Ashanti Region before intercepting it on the Portor–Gurumpe Highway and making away with GH¢300,000.
The Police said personnel from the Counter Terrorism Unit, with support from a local patrol team, launched a swift pursuit into the nearby bush, leading to the arrest of four additional suspects. They were identified as Abdul Rahman Mashud, 21; Asigri Avoka, 25; Awini Stephen, 19; and Faisal Salifu, 26.
A search conducted during the operation resulted in the recovery of the entire GH¢300,000, which police believe was stolen during the robbery.
All six suspects are currently in police custody assisting with investigations and are expected to face court proceedings upon the conclusion of investigations.
The Bono East Regional Police Command praised the vigilance and prompt response of officers at the Portor Police Barrier, as well as the professionalism of the Counter Terrorism Unit, describing their actions as instrumental in foiling the robbery and recovering the stolen money. The Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives, property and ensuring public safety across the region.
