Six male occupants have sustained injuries after a black Toyota Corolla plunged into the Birim River at Biremso, near Anyinasin Junction on the Accra-Kumasi Highway.
The accident occurred on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, with no fatalities recorded.
The Bunso Fire Station of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) received a distress call at about 9:04 a.m. reporting the incident. A duty crew led by ADO II Dacosta Amankwah was dispatched at 9:06 a.m. and arrived at the scene at approximately 9:11 a.m.
According to an eyewitness, he heard a loud crash and rushed to the scene, where he found the black Toyota Corolla, with registration number GR 1425-18, submerged in the Birim River.
Before the arrival of the fire personnel, members of the public had rescued all six occupants from the vehicle.
The injured men were subsequently transported to Hawa Saviour Memorial Hospital for medical attention.
The vehicle was extensively damaged in the crash, while some personal belongings were recovered from the wreckage.
The incident has renewed concerns about road safety along the busy Accra-Kumasi Highway, particularly at sections where vehicles are at risk of veering off the road.
The cause of the accident has not yet been established. The Ghana National Fire Service said investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances that led to the vehicle plunging into the Birim River.
