ACCRA, Ghana, 12th October: President John Dramani Mahama has urged the newly sworn-in Deputy Chairpersons of the Electoral Commission (EC) to strengthen the training and preparation of electoral officials to improve the administration of elections in Ghana.
He said credible elections depend not only on the conduct of polling-day activities but also on sustained preparation, professional personnel, accurate records, reliable logistics and effective resource management.
President Mahama gave the charge during the swearing-in ceremony of Dr. Joseph Kwaku Asamoah Esq and Emelia Afi Agbenyo at the Presidency.
He highlighted Dr. Asamoah’s experience in audit, finance, electoral administration and the training of electoral officers, saying his background provided a valuable foundation for his new responsibilities.
Dr. Asamoah’s combination of legal, financial and economic expertise, alongside his practical knowledge of the Commission’s systems and operations, was also identified by the President as an important asset.
“I therefore encourage you to apply that experience to strengthen institutional systems, improve the preparation of electoral personnel, and promote sound stewardship of public resources,” President Mahama stated.
He further noted that Dr. Asamoah’s teaching and contributions to electoral policy and security training demonstrated the importance of connecting practical experience with research and professional development.
The President urged both Deputy Chairpersons to work closely with fellow Commissioners and staff to promote professionalism at every level of the institution.
He said consistent standards must be maintained and operational problems identified early and resolved promptly to strengthen the Commission’s effectiveness.
President Mahama also called for the appropriate use of technology to improve the reliability and accessibility of electoral processes.
He stressed that technological systems must be properly tested, supported by adequate safeguards and accompanied by clear communication to the public.
The President added that electoral preparations must take account of the needs of persons with disabilities, older citizens, women, young people and eligible voters in remote communities.
He said the Commission must ensure that every eligible citizen can participate in the electoral process and that every valid vote counts.
President Mahama charged the two officials to approach their responsibilities with impartiality, competence and fairness, emphasising that their decisions must always be guided by the national interest.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting the Electoral Commission in carrying out its mandate while respecting its independence.
