President Mahama Sets Six-Month Deadline For Banks To Introduce Affordable Housing Products

ACCRA, Ghana, 7th October: President John Dramani Mahama has challenged at least three financial institutions to introduce or revise affordable housing loan products within the next six months.

He said the new products must specifically target households that are currently excluded from formal housing finance.

President Mahama issued the challenge on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, when he opened the National Conference on Housing Finance at the Mövenpick Ambassador Hotel in Accra.

He said the conference should not end with discussions and recommendations alone, but must produce concrete actions that can improve access to affordable housing.

“I expect that the communiqué that comes out of this conference, and the final report, will set out focused programmes of action with clear responsibilities, timelines, financial requirements, and implementation milestones,” he said.

As part of the expected outcomes, President Mahama called for commitments from at least three financial institutions to introduce new or revise existing affordable housing loan products within six months.

He said the products should demonstrate how people currently excluded from formal finance could be brought into the housing finance system.

The President also called for pilot financing partnerships between the National Housing Fund, lenders and developers.

He said such partnerships must be based on realistic house prices, clearly identified beneficiaries and credible delivery arrangements.

President Mahama further directed stakeholders to establish a technical working group on green affordable housing finance and publish a practical roadmap for the proposed national home buyer database.

He said a follow-up review should subsequently assess the commitments made, financing mobilised, products introduced and progress towards actual housing delivery.

“Ghanaians must see in practice what has changed as a result of this gathering we are at today,” he said.

The President said the ultimate measure of success would be whether teachers, nurses, artisans, young families and other ordinary Ghanaians could access decent homes without being overwhelmed by housing costs.
