President John Dramani Mahama has directed the formation of an inter-agency task force to develop a comprehensive roadmap to prevent the trafficking of drugs through Ghana’s borders.
The directive followed a meeting of security chiefs chaired by the President on Thursday, September 17, 2026, at which he received a detailed briefing on investigations into the recent trafficking of drugs out of Ghana’s ports.
The meeting reviewed the existing security architecture and systems at the country’s ports and other entry and exit points, as well as measures being implemented to detect and prevent illicit drug trafficking.
President Mahama was informed that 10 individuals, including four officers of the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), are currently being held in connection with the ongoing investigations.
The President subsequently directed the relevant security and law-enforcement agencies to strengthen collaboration and identify gaps in the existing systems that may be exploited by individuals involved in drug trafficking.
The newly constituted inter-agency task force is expected to translate the outcomes of the meeting into a detailed roadmap outlining specific measures to prevent the trafficking of narcotics through Ghana’s borders.
President Mahama has given the task force two weeks to submit its report and proposed measures for implementation.
