Member of Parliament for Okere, Hon. Daniel Nana Addo-Kenneth, has called on Ghanaians to put aside political differences and unite behind the Black Stars as they prepare for their opening match against Panama at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Contributing to a statement in Parliament on Ghana’s prospects at the tournament, the lawmaker emphasized that support for the national team should transcend partisan interests, describing the World Cup as a moment that belongs to all Ghanaians.
“For once in this country, for once in this House, this is not about NPP, this is not about NDC, this is not about the leadership in this House. It is about Ghana,” he stated.
Hon. Addo-Kenneth argued that a positive start to the World Cup campaign would provide a much-needed morale boost for the country’s youth and offer a sense of hope and national pride.
“We need this victory for the youth of this country. Football gives people enjoyment and provides a brief escape from the stresses of everyday life,” he said. “Seeing Ghana flags flying once again across our communities brings nostalgia and hope. A win will give us that euphoric feeling that Ghana football has always brought to the nation.”
The MP highlighted the importance of grassroots football development, referencing institutions such as Dehu Sports Stadium and Dehu United in Auckland as examples of platforms that have contributed to nurturing talent for the national teams. He noted that Ghana’s rich football history has been built on the efforts of numerous legends and football development structures across the country.
“You cannot talk about Ghana football without acknowledging the legends who have contributed immensely to the growth of the game. Okere itself has produced many football talents who have served this nation proudly,” he added.
Addressing concerns over injuries within the Black Stars squad, Hon. Addo-Kenneth maintained that the absence of some key players should not dampen expectations. Instead, he believes it presents an opportunity for other players to step up and prove their worth on the biggest stage.
“While some players may be unavailable due to injuries, this is the moment for others to seize their chance and demonstrate that Ghana remains a true football nation,” he remarked.
Looking ahead to Ghana’s late-night clash against Panama, the Okere legislator suggested that the match could have a positive economic impact, with many Ghanaians expected to stay awake to follow the action.
“With the game scheduled close to midnight, many people will be watching. In a way, that could help stimulate economic activity,” he said. “At a time when revenues are falling, any positive momentum generated by the Black Stars can contribute to lifting the national mood and supporting economic activity.”
Expressing his excitement at contributing to the parliamentary debate, Hon. Addo-Kenneth concluded with a confident prediction ahead of the crucial Group L encounter.
“I am very excited to have been given this opportunity to make this contribution. This Panama game should be a walkover for Ghana. It is a must-win match for the Black Stars,” he declared.
