Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has described the party’s “Democracy Under Attack” demonstration as a legitimate expression of public dissatisfaction over what he believes is the selective application of justice and the alleged targeting of opposition members by state institutions.
Ahiagbah said the protest is intended to draw attention to what the party sees as growing concerns over fairness, the rule of law and the independence of state investigative agencies.
Ahiagbah stressed that the NPP was not seeking to undermine the work of state institutions but rather calling for professionalism and fairness in the discharge of their constitutional mandates.
He specifically appealed to the Executive Director of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), Raymond Archer, to ensure that investigations are conducted objectively and without bias.
“Raymond Archer is doing his work, but he must do it professionally. We don’t have any intention of gagging state institutions. What we are saying is that they must do their work professionally and nobody will complain if they do their work professionally.
“What is being done today may be repeated tomorrow if they are not mindful. What we need is that everyone should be treated fairly, and we are not asking for special treatment, so the selectivity must stop. We are all Ghanaians and the NDC must govern the country for the benefit of all Ghanaians.”
The demonstration, held on Thursday, August 6, attracted hundreds of NPP supporters, party executives and sympathisers from across the country.
Protesters assembled at the forecourt of the Supreme Court in Accra before embarking on a peaceful march through the principal streets of the capital to the Jubilee House, where petitions are expected to be presented to both the judiciary and the Presidency.
