TEMA, Ghana, 3rd October: The Secretary General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, says the outcome of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) National Delegates Conference will not change what he describes as the party’s lack of a clear plan to develop the country.
According to him, Ghanaians should not be overly concerned about the leadership changes within the NPP, arguing that the party’s primary objective when in government is to enrich its members.
Speaking on Ahotor FM’s Yepe Ahunu programme on Saturday, October 3, Mr Koomson urged the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) to remain focused and improve its engagement with the party’s grassroots.
“I don’t care if Akufo-Addo is made the national chairman. The NDC must just be focused and sit up on the way they relate with their grassroots,” he said.
Mr Koomson also praised President John Dramani Mahama for what he described as his leadership style and international recognition, citing the President’s recent participation and address at the 81st United Nations General Assembly.
He said President Mahama is demonstrating the capacity to gradually turn around what he described as the difficult economic situation inherited from the previous NPP administration.
The GFL Secretary General further expressed strong support for President Mahama’s leadership, saying he would welcome a situation in which the President could remain in office beyond the constitutionally prescribed limits.
“If President Mahama will be made the permanent president, I will like because he is doing well and that’s exactly the person we need as President,” he said.
Mr Koomson, however, called on Ghanaians to support the President’s efforts to improve living conditions, particularly during the remaining period of his current term.
“Let’s all help him with his plans he has for the country in his last two years remaining,” he said.
He also urged the NDC leadership not to lose touch with its grassroots, stressing that effective communication and engagement with party supporters would be important as the government continues to implement its agenda.
