Dreams FC have emerged as Ghana’s highest-ranked club in the latest Confederation of African Football (CAF) club rankings ahead of the 2026/27 season, with traditional powerhouses Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko absent from the continental standings.
The “Still Believe” lads occupy 32nd place in the latest CAF rankings, thanks to their outstanding performances in recent African inter-club competitions, most notably their historic run to the semi-finals of the CAF Confederation Cup. Their impressive campaign earned the club valuable ranking points and further enhanced Ghana’s reputation on the continental stage.
Dreams FC’s rapid rise represents one of the biggest success stories in Ghanaian football in recent years. Having established themselves as a competitive force beyond the Ghana Premier League, the club has demonstrated that consistency and ambition can translate into success in African football.
Their remarkable achievements have seen them surpass Ghana’s two most successful and glamorous clubs, Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko, both of whom are missing from the latest CAF rankings due to their limited participation and inconsistent performances in continental competitions in recent seasons.
Despite their absence, Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko remain among Africa’s most storied clubs. Asante Kotoko are Ghana’s most successful side in CAF competitions, having won the CAF Champions League twice, while Hearts of Oak famously lifted the prestigious trophy in 2000 and added the CAF Super Cup the following year. However, a lack of sustained success on the continental stage in recent years has affected their current CAF ranking status.
Medeama SC are the only other Ghanaian club featured in the latest rankings, occupying 54th position. The Tarkwa-based side secured their place through recent appearances in CAF competitions, including their participation in the CAF Champions League, further contributing to Ghana’s continental presence.
The latest rankings reflect the shifting landscape of Ghanaian club football, where emerging clubs are making significant strides while some of the country’s traditional giants continue to rebuild and seek a return to continental prominence.
Across the continent, South African champions Mamelodi Sundowns lead the CAF rankings with 73 points, overtaking Egyptian powerhouse Al Ahly, who are second with 66 points. Tunisia’s Espérance Sportive de Tunis, Morocco’s RS Berkane and Algeria’s USM Alger complete the top five clubs in Africa.
For Ghana, Dreams FC’s impressive ranking is an encouraging sign of the country’s growing competitiveness on the continental stage. Their success serves as an inspiration for other Ghanaian clubs to invest in player development, infrastructure and sustained participation in CAF competitions.
With Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko absent from the latest rankings, the responsibility of representing Ghana among Africa’s elite clubs now rests with Dreams FC and Medeama SC, who continue to carry the nation’s hopes in continental football.
