New Medical Laboratory Commissioned to Boost Healthcare in Agotime-Ziope

Residents of Agotime-Ziope District in Ghana’s Volta Region are expected to benefit from improved healthcare delivery following the commissioning of a new ultra-modern medical laboratory at the Akpokorpe CHPS compound.

The district, established in 2012, has historically relied on primary healthcare systems such as Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS), small health centres, and outreach programmes. Despite gradual improvements over the years, access to quality healthcare remains a challenge for many communities.

At a ceremony attended by traditional authorities, clergy, health professionals, media representatives, and government officials, the newly constructed facility was officially inaugurated. The project was undertaken by the Council of Ewe Associations of North America (CEANA), with additional support through the provision of medical equipment by the area’s Member of Parliament.

District Chief Executive, Alfred Eklu Odikro, and health directors from both the regional and district levels were present, highlighting the significance of the development to the district’s growth.

The new laboratory is expected to enhance diagnostic services for residents of Akpokorpe and surrounding communities, reducing the need for referrals to distant health facilities.

As part of activities marking the event, a free medical screening exercise was organised for residents, providing access to essential health checks.

The Member of Parliament also inspected an ongoing maternity block project at the facility, which is currently about 70 percent complete. The project is aimed at improving maternal and child healthcare services in the area.

In a related development, construction work on another CHPS compound at Adedome is progressing steadily, with support in the form of building materials, including cement and wood, to accelerate completion. Health authorities expressed satisfaction with the pace and quality of work.

While these developments mark significant progress, Agotime-Ziope continues to face challenges such as inadequate health infrastructure, limited access to clean water, poor road networks, and a shortage of essential medical equipment. Public health concerns, including disease outbreaks and rising teenage pregnancy rates, also persist.

Stakeholders say continued investment in healthcare infrastructure and services will be critical to improving health outcomes in the district.
