NDC Elections Director Raises Concerns Over Giant Billboards in Constituency Elections

The Director of Elections of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mahdi Jibril, has raised concerns over the erection of giant billboards by aspirants contesting the party’s internal constituency elections, questioning whether such expensive publicity materials are appropriate for internal party contests.

Speaking in an interview on Ahotor FM on Monday, 12 October 2026, Mr Jibril observed that the erection of giant billboards for constituency-level elections could create public perceptions about the cost of campaigning and the resources required to contest internal party positions.

He explained that the NDC’s constituency elections are internal party activities intended primarily for party members and delegates, rather than general public campaigns.

Mr Jibril noted that with nine delegates at the branch level, the party must carefully consider the nature of campaign materials candidates use to reach voters within its internal electoral structures.

He said the development raises questions about campaign strategies, expenditure and whether aspirants are directing their resources towards the appropriate audience.

The NDC Elections Director also stressed the importance of timely communication and effective planning, particularly as the party prepares for subsequent regional and national elections.

According to him, delays in communicating electoral information and campaign arrangements could leave aspirants and party members with limited time to prepare, especially when several stages of internal elections follow one another within a short period.

Mr Jibril recalled that concerns about campaign posters and banners had arisen during previous internal elections, including the party’s 2018 electoral process, indicating that the issue was not entirely new.

He emphasised the need for discipline among aspirants and party members, urging them to conduct themselves in ways that uphold the party’s internal electoral procedures.

On whether the party would take action against candidates who fail to comply with the expected standards, Mr Jibril expressed hope that aspirants would exercise restraint and demonstrate discipline without waiting for the party leadership to intervene.

He said the ultimate objective of contesting internal elections should be to win positions and serve the party, adding that candidates must remain mindful of the broader interests of the organisation.

The discussion comes as attention turns to the conduct of the NDC’s internal elections and the campaign methods adopted by aspirants seeking various leadership positions.
