The Director of Elections of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mahdi Jibril, says the party’s ongoing branch elections are progressing smoothly across more than 4,000 branches nationwide.
Speaking on Ahotor FM’s Adekyee Mu Nsem programme with Citizen Kofi Owusu in Accra on June 25, 2026, Mr. Jibril said the exercise has so far been peaceful, well-organised, and free from major incidents that could undermine its credibility.
According to him, concerns, complaints, and petitions are a normal part of any democratic electoral process and should not be viewed as evidence of serious problems within the exercise.
“Everything is going on well across the branches. So far, so good. In every election, people may have concerns and may file petitions, and that is allowed. It does not mean there is a problem with the entire process,” he stated.
Mr. Jibril explained that many branch executive positions are being contested unopposed, a development he said has helped reduce tension and competition in several areas.
He noted that the branch elections have generated significant interest among party members because the register compiled after the exercise will be used for the election of constituency executives.
According to him, constituency executives and party members are closely monitoring the process because the branch register will determine who qualifies to participate in the next phase of the party’s internal elections.
“The branch elections are very important because after we finish, the register that will be compiled is the same register that will be used for the constituency executive elections,” he explained.
Mr. Jibril said the party expects to complete the branch elections by the end of July.
He indicated that branches where candidates are contesting unopposed are expected to complete their processes within the established election timetable, while elections in branches where no nominations were initially filed have been scheduled to take place between July 14 and July 24.
Following the elections, the party will begin the compilation, verification, and validation of the branch register in preparation for the constituency executive elections.
Mr. Jibril urged party members with grievances to follow the laid-down procedures by submitting their concerns through their respective constituency offices.
He added that the party has assigned regional executives to receive complaints, engage with aggrieved members, and help resolve issues to ensure that the process remains transparent, peaceful, and credible.
He further appealed to aspirants, delegates, and supporters to conduct themselves responsibly and allow the party’s internal democratic processes to proceed without unnecessary tension.
Mr. Jibril stressed that the NDC remains committed to conducting free, fair, and transparent branch elections as part of its preparations for future organisational and electoral activities.
